The ceremony of worshipping Brothers and going out to sea is related to the 108 fishermen from Tanmen. Qionghai people love to go to sea and dare to go to sea. The belief of 108 Brothers is a unique embodiment of Qionghai's marine culture. According to legend, pirates were rampant in the South China Sea in the past and often attacked fishing boats. Therefore, 108 fishermen from Tanmen became sworn brothers. They made a vow to share life and death and often formed a fleet to go out to sea together. During a fishing trip, the fishermen encountered pirates again. At the critical moment, everyone tied the boats together and finally repelled the fierce pirates together. Since then, people have followed the example of the 108 brothers and went out to sea together to resist risks. "108 Brothers" has also become a spiritual symbol of the unity, cooperation, progress and retreat of fishermen. Later, one year when they went out to sea, the 108 brothers encountered bad weather and all the fishermen were overturned in the sea. But even so, everyone did not escape separately. The fierce storm eventually killed all 108 brothers, but the friendship between the brothers is unforgettable. Before the mid-Ming Dynasty, fishermen in Tanmen Town, Qionghai, engaged in fishing for sea cucumbers, shellfish and other seafood, building houses, farming and fishing in the Xisha Islands and Nansha Islands in the South China Sea. They went out in winter and returned in summer, and their work at sea lasted for several months. Some fishermen lived on the islands, built straw huts or coral stone houses, went to sea to fish, built temples to worship gods, and continued from generation to generation, working hard and pioneering. During the life-threatening voyage, the numerous brother temples scattered along the coast of Tanmen and the South China Sea Islands were a spiritual sustenance for the fishermen going out to sea. The "108 Brothers" sacrificial ceremony has been passed down from the Ming Dynasty to the present day, and has a history of more than 600 years. It is usually divided into three modes. The sacrifice before the departure of a long voyage is commonly called "doing blessings", that is, "the ceremony of sacrificing to the brothers at sea"; the sacrifice after returning from a long voyage is commonly called "washing salt"; the general worship during festivals and when the ship arrives in a new sea area is generally called "doing brothers". Although the processes of these three forms of sacrificial ceremonies are similar, they all offer meat, rice, and wine to the "108 Brothers", and then burn paper money and set off firecrackers. The most important and grand one is the "Brothers Going to Sea Ceremony", which mainly includes the ritual process of the boat owner praying to the "108 Brothers" in the "108 Brothers" temple and on the fishing boat. According to the fishermen in Tanmen, in order to commemorate the 108 brothers, in recent decades, the people of Tanmen have built temples in every village, which means that "Tanmen people are brothers when they go to sea, and they should help each other when encountering problems", which has now become a unique marine culture of Tanmen. On May 24, 2021, the Brothers Going to Sea Ceremony declared by Qionghai City, Hainan Province was approved by the State Council to be included in the fifth batch of national representative projects of intangible cultural heritage.
