The weaving and dyeing techniques of the Li nationality have a long history and distinct characteristics. There are varieties such as linen weaving, cotton weaving, brocade, printing and dyeing (including tie-dyeing), embroidery, and dragon quilts. The Li nationality settlements have extremely rich textile and printing and dyeing raw materials such as kapok and wild hemp. Before the popularization of cotton textiles, wild hemp textiles were popular in the Li nationality area. People usually peel off the outer skin of the wild hemp collected in the rainy season, and after soaking, rinsing and other processes, they are made into hemp cloth. After the hemp cloth is dyed, it is rubbed into hemp yarn by hand, or twisted with a spinning wheel, and then woven into cloth. Wild hemp cloth has a solid texture and is mostly used to make outer clothes and skirts worn during labor. The patterns of Li brocade are rich and colorful, with more than 160 kinds, mainly including patterns of people, animals, plants, flowers, daily necessities, geometric patterns, etc., and the main ones are patterns of people, animals, and plants. There are two main looms for weaving Li brocade: foot-operated looms and waist looms. The waist loom is an extremely ancient loom. Li women can use it to weave exquisite and complex patterns. Li brocade with different patterns, colors and styles was once an important symbol to distinguish tribal groups with different blood relations, and it has extremely important cultural value. The printing and dyeing of the Li people is mainly tie-dyeing, which was called jiaohua in ancient times. The fabric is tied, dyed, dried, folded, and finally formed into colorful cloth. The dyes used in printing and dyeing are mainly plant leaves, flowers, barks, roots, etc., supplemented by natural mineral pigments. There are two types of Li embroidery: flat embroidery and double-sided embroidery. Among them, the double-sided embroidery of the Li people in the Run dialect of Baisha area is the most famous, and the composition and pattern are very exquisite. The dragon quilt is a treasure among Li brocade. It integrates multiple techniques such as textile, printing and dyeing, embroidery, and weaving. It is exquisitely made, colorful, elegant in pattern, and diverse in style. It has the most outstanding skills and the highest cultural and artistic value among Li brocades, so it has become a treasure that has been tributed in Hainan for generations. The dragon quilt is also called the big quilt, and it is called the Yazhou quilt in history books. Dragon quilt weaving and embroidery have different artistic styles and characteristics due to the different dialects and living areas of the Li people, and have become valuable physical materials for studying the evolution of Li culture. After 1950, some Li women no longer weave dragon quilts. Nowadays, most of the women who master this skill are old, and there is a lack of successors, so it is urgent to save them.
