Fish Lantern Dance
Fish lantern dance is a dance performed by fishermen in the southeast coastal areas during the festive harvest lantern festival. It is popular in the Shipu Changguowei area of Xiangshan County. The dance starts with lanterns on the eve of the Lantern Festival and ends on the 18th day of the first lunar month. The crucian carp lantern dance is invited by neighbors from all over the country to perform because of its neat formation, graceful dance posture and auspicious symbolism. The derivative of the fish lantern dance is said to be as follows: about 400 years ago, three brothers of the Chen family fled from the war and settled in Banbianshan outside the east gate of Changguo. Later, the third brother of the Chen family mastered the skills of the sea and became a famous local ship captain. He married Huang Linghua, the daughter of the eldest brother Huang. Huang Linghua was skilled in craftsmanship, especially in making vivid yellow croaker lanterns. The neighbors envied Huang Linghua's fish lanterns and imitated her. Later, Huang Linghua's husband died at sea and turned into a reef, which was called "Chen Widow Reef" locally. Every night, Chen Widow Reef sparkles, and people can avoid disaster and gain blessings by just calling "Widow Reef" softly. People were grateful for Huang Linghua's kindness in guiding the way, and they made yellow fish lanterns and hung them up to commemorate her. Since then, the lantern festival in Changguowei has become increasingly popular, and every family is proud to have fish lanterns at home and feel lucky to have lantern dances.
