Yuanmou Lanterns are a local opera that is based on folk songs and dances, absorbs foreign operas, repertoires, music, performance forms, and integrates local folk songs, minor tunes and folk dances. Yuanmou Lanterns were formed during the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty and matured in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. During the Republic of China period, there were 39 lantern societies in the county, which toured neighboring villages and communities every Spring Festival, performing 111 repertoires. In 1958, Yuanmou County established the Yuanmou County Lantern Troupe, which staged many adapted traditional lanterns and transplanted modern lanterns. Yuanmou traditional lanterns have 101 traditional repertoires, divided into literary dramas, martial arts dramas, and temple fair dramas, among which are robe and belt dramas and three small dramas. The robe and belt drama has a large scene and many characters, with all the roles of Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, and Chou, and most of them are large and medium-sized dramas. The three small dramas highlight the characteristics of smallness, namely Xiaosheng, Xiaodan, and Qiao, and mainly perform humorous small dramas. Traditional lantern repertoires include transplanted foreign operas and creations by local artists. After integrating local folk songs, minor tunes and local opera, they have formed the distinctive style of Yuanmou local lanterns. There are 151 Yuanmou lantern scores. The materials collected and sorted by literary and artistic workers include "Yuanmou Lantern Music" (three volumes), "Yuanmou Lantern Music Score", "Yuanmou Lantern Materials", etc. In addition to the large number of repertoires and repertoires, Yuanmou lanterns are full of singing and dancing, with strong performance and strong local flavor, especially the lantern clubs performing traditional lanterns, which are quite traditional. Yuanmou County currently has one professional lantern troupe, 119 traditional lantern clubs and amateur performance teams, 287 old, middle-aged and young traditional lantern artists, and 2,140 amateur lantern actors. They use the slack season in farming to visit villages and villages to exchange performances with each other, making positive contributions to the inheritance and development of Yuanmou traditional lanterns.
