The legend of He Wenxiu is spread in Haining. The story took place in Haining, and some relics still exist today. According to the "Shanghai Yue Opera Chronicles", the Ming Dynasty playwright Xin Yishan collected the story of He Wenxiu and adapted it into the legendary play "The Story of He Wenxiu's Jade Hairpin". The plot is that the poor scholar He Wenxiu fell in love with the rich girl Wang Qiongzhen and fled to Haining. He Wenxiu was framed and imprisoned by a local tyrant. Wang Qiongzhen cut her hair and disfigured her, vowed not to marry again, and after going through hardships, the two finally reunited. Based on this, it can be inferred that the legend of He Wenxiu had taken shape in the middle of the Ming Dynasty. For more than 600 years, the legend of He Wenxiu has been continuously interpreted in folk narration, and different versions have been produced. Elders in Haining Yuanhua, Dingqiao, Yanguan and other places can tell stories about He Wenxiu. After the 20th century, the legend of He Wenxiu was adapted into many Yue Opera scripts. The Yue Opera "He Wenxiu" is a famous Yin School drama that has been performed for a long time and enjoys a high reputation in the Yue Opera world. In recent years, folk art workers in Haining City have collected more than 20 stories of He Wenxiu through extensive investigation and in-depth interviews. After screening, seven stories have been published in books and magazines such as "Zhejiang Folk Literature Collection-Jiaxing City Story Volume", "Classic of Mountains and Seas", and "Jiaxing Customs and Folk Customs". The variation phenomenon in the spread of He Wenxiu's story has also attracted the attention of folk literature researchers, and they have conducted theoretical discussions on this. In the 2008 Jiaxing City Intangible Cultural Heritage Survey, new discoveries were made, and stories such as "He Wenxiu's Escape from Nansi Bridge" and "Legends in Xinghua Village" were collected. The He Wenxiu legend has the main characteristics of folk oral literature. The story is tortuous and moving, good and evil are clearly distinguished, and the characters are vivid and vivid. It has a long history of being circulated among the people of Haining, and has been adapted and transplanted into the form of drama art, with far-reaching influence. The legend praises loyal love, reflects the people's clear position of punishing evil and promoting good, and their good wishes for a happy and fulfilling life, and has a distinct people-oriented and progressive nature. At the same time, in the process of the legend of He Wenxiu being spread among the people, it has been interpreted by generations of folk artists and integrated into the local folk customs of Haining, and has the research value of folklore. Through the study of the variability and inheritance process of the legend of He Wenxiu, we can further explore the variation phenomenon in folk culture, which has certain academic research value. By excavating some relics related to the legend of He Wenxiu, we can enrich the local tourism and cultural resources. Further collection and excavation of the legend of He Wenxiu can also provide valuable creative materials for professional performance groups. At present, historical relics related to the legend of He Wenxiu are gradually disappearing and are in urgent need of protection.
