Fengqiao bamboo carving is known for its green color retention, and its forms of expression are diverse. The types of works include armrests, pen holders, bamboo root carvings, screens, hanging screens, chess bowls, etc. Feng Jiasheng (born in 1946), the inheritor of Fengqiao bamboo carving, learned from his father Feng Guojie. Feng Guojie is good at bronze and stone carving and bamboo carving. He once wrote "Bai Mei Zhai Yin Cun" with Wu Tianru and others. Feng Jiasheng was influenced by his father since he was a child. He first learned seal carving and then bamboo carving. After adulthood, he devoted himself to the art of bamboo carving. He has developed from carving bamboo pieces and long scrolls to carving armrests, pen holders, bamboo root carvings, screens, hanging screens, chess bowls, etc., and has influenced some enthusiasts around him, gradually forming a unique style of Fengqiao bamboo carving in terms of color, color, and shape. His representative work "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" won the "Tiangong Award" at the first Zhejiang National Folk Arts and Crafts Expo. The process of Fengqiao bamboo carving focuses on three steps: selecting bamboo, cutting materials, and carving. Bamboo is picked in winter. Straight, long, sparsely knotted, and spotless bamboo is selected. The bamboo is selected for its essence and less insect-eaten. Bamboo with a strong body and more than three years of growth is preferred. Cutting materials: After the bamboo is cut, it must be naturally dried for two years, and then divided into bamboo tubes or bamboo slices according to the requirements of the work. After being steamed and boiled, the blanks are made after they are completely dry. Carving: First, the corresponding patterns are drawn on the bamboo tubes and bamboo slices, and then scraped, carved, polished, and finally finished with a carving knife. Fengqiao bamboo carving is known for its green retention. The surface of the bamboo cannot be scratched to ensure that the work is as clear as jade. The artistic characteristics of Fengqiao bamboo carving: First, the knife technique is delicate and refined, the knife path is smooth, and it is completed in one go; second, the lines are beautiful and strong; third, it has the artistic effect of shallow relief, which is the most significant feature different from other bamboo carving arts. The works are beautiful in appearance, easy to carry and preserve, suitable for collection or gifting to relatives and friends, and have certain appreciation value and practical value. Fengqiao bamboo carving is a purely manual operation with a complex process. It is time-consuming and laborious to make, and the economic benefits are not high. There are only a few bamboo carving artists, and there is a lack of successors, so the art is facing extinction. Since 2005, Feng Jiasheng has been offering bamboo carving training classes at home all year round to pass on the art voluntarily. Fengqiao bamboo carving has been included in the first batch of Jiaxing City's intangible cultural heritage list.
