Dongtou Shell Carving

Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Among the colorful folk crafts on Dongtou Island, shell carving is the most colorful and has been listed in the Zhejiang Provincial National Folk Art Special Protection List by the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government. Shells are a gift from the sea to mankind, and shell carving is the crystallization of the wisdom and creativity of the island people. From shell strings, shell piles, shell carving paintings to round carvings, some folk artists in Dongtou who are dedicated to the creation of shell carving crafts have absorbed the strengths of sister carving arts such as wood carving and stone carving, and created a batch of shell round carving artworks. These works break through the limitations of the original shell carving screens attached to the base plate and the outer frame, focus on the overall shape of the shells, and use creative techniques such as penetration and hollowing to carve finely, presenting a three-dimensional and all-round artistic beauty, which is highly praised by experts and consumers. Compared with shell pile crafts, the creation techniques and production processes of shell carving screens are more complicated. The drawings alone are divided into a general design drawing, a line drawing combination drawing, and a patch decomposition drawing. For production and processing that strictly follows the requirements of the drawings, after the shell raw materials are selected, they must first be cut and ground with a grinding wheel to make a rough blank, and then the surface blocks must be roughly carved, followed by fine chiseling with various techniques such as line engraving, dotting, and splitting. They must also be finely ground with water and fine sandpaper before entering the polishing and coloring processes. Finally, according to the general design drawing, the carefully crafted pieces of shell carving blocks are assembled and glued to the pre-processed and colored baseboard, surrounded by an outer frame made of precious wood such as mahogany, and then covered with glass. This kind of shell carving hanging screen is like a painting with bright colors; it is like a sculpture with a strong three-dimensional sense; the size can be large or small, and the display can be standing or hanging, which makes people feel novel and unique.
