🎧  Listen to Introduction

Wenzhou hair embroidery began in the Yuan Dynasty and has been passed down to this day. It is a representative project of national intangible cultural heritage. The main inheritance base is built at Wenzhou University (Wenzhou University Hair Embroidery Research Institute). Hair has rich humanistic connotations in traditional culture. Hair embroidery works have strong folk connotations and unique charm of conveying emotions. They are artistic expressions of love, family affection and friendship, and are considered to be the handicraft art closest to human emotions. Wenzhou hair embroidery is a folk handicraft that uses people's natural color hair as materials, needles as tools, and follows the rules of plastic arts to create images on stretched and smooth cloth. In terms of hair, it can be divided into two types: one is monochrome hair embroidery, that is, the hair of the same race is used as material for creation; the other is color hair embroidery, that is, hair of different races is used for embroidery or as a base color. Wenzhou hair embroidery takes "applying needles according to objects and following the heart" as its creative concept, and cleverly uses the density of stitches to change and superimpose multiple layers to shape images, which is different from the dense stitches and lines of traditional silk embroidery. The embroidery surface has clear silk texture, unique texture, elegant plain color, and subtle changes, showing a delicate, noble and elegant artistic temperament. It has aesthetic value, collection value, cultural research value and international communication value. It has been presented as a state gift to foreign heads of state, playing a unique role in international exchanges and enjoying the saying of "hair embroidery diplomacy".
