Lantern viewing during the Lantern Festival is an important annual custom, and lantern making has thus become a special folk art with folk characteristics. An artist named Zhang from Kaifeng, Henan Province, is famous for making lanterns. According to the Kaifeng County Chronicles, Zhang Taiquan in the late Qing Dynasty first created the "Bianjing Lantern", which has been passed down for six generations. Kaifeng lanterns have a long history. After the Northern Song Dynasty established Kaifeng as its capital, the Lantern Festival was unprecedentedly grand. The lanterns and lantern categories are specifically and thoroughly recorded in the Dongjing Menghualu written by Meng Yuanlao in the Song Dynasty. In modern times, due to various reasons, the Lantern Festival has gradually declined. In particular, during the Cultural Revolution, the Lantern Festival and lanterns were classified as "Four Olds" and were wantonly destroyed, making the lantern making craft endangered. The shape and paste-making skills of Zhang's lanterns in Bianjing Lantern Zhang originated from the folk lantern-making tradition in Kaifeng. Its main varieties, such as "dragon and phoenix auspicious lanterns", "lotus giving birth to a son lanterns", "peony rich lanterns", and "auspicious lanterns", all reflect the traditional cultural connotation of praying for good luck. At present, the social foundation on which Zhang's lanterns depend for survival and development has changed. With the continuous advancement of science and technology and the fading of traditional folk customs, the manual skills of Bianjing lantern making have been neglected, lacking successors, and some unique skills have been lost. The prospects for Kaifeng Zhang's lantern craftsmanship are not optimistic, and actively carrying out rescue and protection work has become a top priority.
