Boyan Town is located 10 kilometers south of Wu'an City, Hebei Province. It is adjacent to Gushan Mountain in the south and Nancheying in the north, with convenient transportation. Since ancient times, residents have been doing business in foreign cities and buying properties in the village, so that there are many shops in the village, and the streets are full of merchants, making the village very prosperous. Boyan's characteristic houses are mainly distributed in Wudao Street, Nanwen, Longquan, Luoyu, Zhuangyan, Tonghui, Nanbei'anzhuang and other villages in Beianzhuang Township. The relatively well-preserved houses include Boyan Xu's Courtyard, Fang's Courtyard, Xu's Two Brothers Courtyard and Nanwen Wangshun Manor. Xu's Courtyard is located in the west of the center of Boyan Village (commonly known as the Nine Gates in Reflection). The overall architectural form belongs to the group courtyard building of the northern quadrangle, which is in the style of the late Qing Dynasty. It was of superior level during the Republic of China. The plane of Xu's house is rectangular, facing north and south, with the north-south direction as the central axis, and the east and west wing buildings are arranged symmetrically. The four quadrangle courtyards are arranged in north-south order, with the gates connected to form a nine-gate in reflection pattern. It is said that this pattern was designed based on the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City has 9,999 and a half rooms, and Xu's house has 99 and a half rooms. The scale is proportionally reduced, but the pattern is basically similar. Boyan folk houses have the following architectural features: 1. Layout: It has a typical northern courtyard-style architecture. The plane is rectangular, the buildings are symmetrical, the layout structure is compact, and the enclosure is strong. It is mainly bungalows, and some also have basements and buildings. The courtyards are single-courtyard style, double-linked style, series-connected style, and parallel style. 2. Structure: Most houses are brick-wood structures, tall and bright, with high steps, high gatehouses, and high foundations. The foundation is mostly stone masonry, the wall is thick, the outer brick is the inner blank (which is conducive to heat preservation and heat insulation), the surface is white lime, there are brick columns and wooden columns under the wall, the wooden beams together form the frame of the house, and the wall only serves as a partition, so there is a saying that "the wall falls but the house does not fall"; the roof is a flat roof (for drying things), the beams, purlins, and rafters are paved with square bricks, and covered with mud, and the surface layer is hammered with white lime stones, which is solid and durable. 3. Architectural shape: the gatehouses along the street, the gatehouses of the accompanying rooms, the window frames, and the top of the screen wall are all covered with eaves and tiles, with ridges on the tiles and beasts at both ends; there are two columns in front of the main house, the seat is carved into a drum shape with bluestone, and there are beams on the columns to make the sloped roof connected to the main house, also with eaves, round rafters, square bricks and tiles, beasts at both ends, and a flat roof behind the sloping roof. People looking up from the courtyard think it is a tiled house, but it is actually a flat house; some of the eaves of the accompanying houses have eaves, some have parapets, and water outlets are set between the walls, and the water outlets are carved from blue bricks. 4. Architectural decoration: mainly carving and painting. Wood carving and painting are mostly used for interior decoration, such as partitions, screens, kang enclosures, beams and columns, etc., and are also used outdoors, such as window lattices, gatehouses, and house doors; brick carving and stone carving are mostly used for exterior decoration, such as eaves, eaves, gatehouses, screen walls, column bases, and door sills. Boyan architecture is a relatively intact late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China style building complex in southern Hebei, reflecting local architectural characteristics, unique construction technology, and exquisite details. The ancient town has maintained a quiet and peaceful lifestyle for hundreds of years, and is a witness to history. It brings together artistic characteristics such as architecture, painting, carving, and arts and crafts, and has high scientific and artistic appreciation value.
