As far as Nanfeng is concerned, they are the symbol of Nuo. Without masks, there is no Nuo class. Masks are the carriers of gods in the Nuo ritual and the costumes of characters in Nuo dance performances. Nanfeng Nuo mask carving has played an extremely important role in the inheritance and development of Nanfeng Nuo dance art. Nanfeng Nuo mask carving is divided into nine steps: material selection, drying, initial blank shaping, initial blank carving, polishing, plastering, painting, and decorative accessories. Before the Ming Dynasty, there was no information available on Nanfeng Nuo mask carving artists. After the Ming Dynasty, there were two main families of Nanfeng Nuo mask carving artists: the Shu family and the Yang family, both of whom took carving Nuo masks as their main occupation. The Yang family was good at carving martial arts, while the Shu family was good at carving literary images. Nanfeng Nuo masks have many characters, with strange selections, various expressions, and colorful colors. The expressions of the masks and their crowns have specific cultural connotations and meanings. Its shapes include: a combination of mythical beasts, portraits, and animal personality. Nanfeng Nuo mask carving has artistic research value and artistic reference and collection value, and has great potential for the development of Nanfeng Nuo cultural tourism industry. Due to the difficulty and time-consuming nature of hand-carved Nuo masks, young people are reluctant to learn, so Nanfeng Nuo mask carving is now lacking successors; modern young people find it difficult to concentrate on traditional skills, so there is a phenomenon of poor skills and general loss of practitioners.
