Huaihai Opera (Huai'an)
Huaihai Opera (Huai'an), a traditional drama item in the second batch of national representative list of intangible cultural heritage. Huaihai Opera, also known as "Sangua Diao" because it is accompanied by a bansanxian, is one of the main local operas in Jiangsu. It is popular in Huai'an, Lianyungang, Suqian in northern Jiangsu, as well as some counties and districts in Yancheng and Xuzhou, including southern Shandong and northeastern Anhui. It is a traditional drama item included in the "Second Batch of National Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage". Huaihai Opera is mostly folk life drama, which is a typical popular art. It performs both full plays and excerpts. Traditional repertoires include "Fan Lihua Inspecting Soldiers", "Pi Xiuying's Four Complaints", "Luo Xie Ji", "Dui Rent", "Scold the Chicken" and other 32 full books and 64 single plays. The singing style is mainly ban-style singing, and some folk tunes are also sung. Singing, reciting, acting and performing are all plain and easy to understand, humorous and interesting, and the form of singing and dancing is particularly warm and vivid. In particular, some small plays such as the traditional "Rent Collection", "Scold the Chicken", "Picking Heads", etc., all have a strong sense of life and civilian characteristics. The accompaniment instruments are mainly Ban Sanxian and Huaihai Gaohu. The overall style has both the roughness and boldness of northern operas and the gentleness and gracefulness of southern operas. A large number of Huaihai opera repertoires are directly derived from the production and life of civilians, which retains a lot of information on local historical evolution and social development, and is of invaluable value for studying the social and cultural history of the Huaihai region. The lyrics structure and vocal changes of Huaihai Opera are rich and diverse and unique, which has certain empirical significance for studying the relationship between lyrics and tunes of Chinese operas, as well as the emotional connotations in the vocal cavity. In particular, in some of its vocal cavities, five entering rhyme categories are still retained, which is of special value for studying the distribution and evolution of the Chinese language. At present, Huaihai Opera, like many local operas in the country, has encountered a survival dilemma. In order to revitalize and promote Huaihai Opera, Huai'an City built the Huai'an Opera Museum, established the Huaihai Opera Research Association, held the Huaihai Opera Art Festival, and held an academic seminar on Huaihai Opera every year to attract more people to participate in the protection of Huaihai Opera.
