Jiangsu
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Wheat straw collage (Dafeng wheat straw collage) is a traditional art project in the second batch of representative projects of intangible cultural heritage of Jiangsu Province. It originated in the middle of the Ming Dynasty. The traditional craft at that time was derived from wheat straw fan core collage, and developed into an independent characteristic craft in the Qing Dynasty. It is said that it was first created by the artist Ni Renji, and then it was once extinct. It was not until the folk artist Jin Cui'e excavated and made it during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty that it was spread. Every spring wheat harvest season, folk artists select the smoothest wheat straw, bleach, dye and press it into thin wheat straw slices, cut and paste them on white silk or cardboard, and use wheat straw to paste (pile) layer by layer to form a picture. Generally, the composition is composed in the form of Chinese painting. It is embedded in a frame as an appreciation item. Wheat straw is also used as dowry ornaments and fan cores. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the art of wheat straw collage has developed greatly, from a single plane collage to a three-dimensional collage shape, such as three-dimensional stacking into goldfish, mandarin ducks, golden pheasants, pandas, etc. There are also flower arrangements and bookmarks made of straw crafts.
