Hami Muqam

Xinjiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Hami Muqam is a large-scale Uyghur music suite with a long history, large volume and complete structure, which is circulated in Hami area in eastern Xinjiang. There are 12 sets of "Qiongduer Muqam" and "Urukduer Muqam", of which 7 sets include two movements (i.e. two sets of tracks), with a total of 258 tracks and thousands of lines of lyrics. In the process of its formation and development, Hami Muqam absorbed the music and art nutrition from the Central Plains, Central Asia and West Asia to varying degrees on the basis of "Yizhou Music" in the Western Regions, and reflected the characteristics of cultural diversity in terms of lyrics, style and structure. In history, Hami Muqam has gone through a process of dissemination and integration from the folk to the palace and finally back to the folk. Through the continuous singing and sorting and standardization of folk artists, it has formed a complete set of songs. Each set of Muqam consists of a prelude of free rhythm and a structural sequence of multiple songs with 4/4, 7/8 and 5/8 rhythms and multiple songs and dances with 2/4 rhythms, which reflects the typical characteristics of integrity. The naming method of Hami Muqam maintains the tradition of the Uyghur people. The name of each set of Muqam has retained the Uyghur name until now, such as "Urukdur Muqam", "Hihiyolan Muqam", "Gani Kem Muqam", etc., which is very unique among the Muqams in various parts of Xinjiang. Influenced by the process of modernization, the aesthetic tastes of contemporary Uyghur people are constantly changing, especially the younger generation knows little about the cultural value of Hami Muqam, so various effective measures must be taken to protect and inherit it.
