🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Lusheng Festival is a festival for the Miao people to welcome the New Year and wish for a good harvest in the lunar calendar. It is the most common festival in the Miao area. The Lusheng Festival (also known as the Thirteen Slopes Festival) held in Shui'antai Township on the thirteenth day of the first lunar month every year is the most typical. The scene is extraordinary, the atmosphere is as hot as fire, and it is full of primitive and simple carnival complex. At that time, with thirteen loud bird gun sounds piercing the sky, thirteen respected "heads" (leaders) raised thirteen bowls of glutinous rice wine, and cheers of "Ya-yi-woo" echoed one after another on the field full of 20,000 to 30,000 people. Thousands of large and small Lushengs were played at the same time in the field. In an instant, the music resounded through the sky, shaking the earth, like a stormy wave, like a mountain of collapse, and like rolling thunder. The "Da Pei" (Miao girl) wearing a pleated skirt and wearing snow-white, jingling silver ornaments, danced a happy and graceful stepping dance around the "Da Heng" (Miao young man) who played the Lusheng. The "Daheng"s played vigorously, and the "Dapei"s danced to their heart's content. The crowd of onlookers was packed with people cheering, shouting, playing, stepping, and watching, all intoxicated. Villagers often use the Lusheng Festival to hold Lusheng competitions, dancing around the Lusheng pillars, and judging who is better based on the level of the tune. There are also horse fighting, horse racing, bird fighting, Miao brocade exhibitions and transactions at the Lusheng Festival, which is also a good opportunity for young men and women to meet, make friends, and talk about love. The rich ethnic interest strongly attracts friends from near and far.
