The art of miniature architecture production is a comprehensive art that integrates wood carving, stone carving, bone carving, and porcelain sculpture. It is mainly distributed in Yangpu, Zhabei, and Xujiahui in Shanghai. Jade, ivory, and wood carving have been practiced in Shanghai since the Qing Dynasty. The heyday was from 1923 to 1928, with more than 1,000 practitioners. Since the 1950s, Yangpu has had outstanding talents and good achievements in folk stone carving, wood carving, miniature carving, and paper cutting. In the 1980s, the Yangpu District Workers' Calligraphy and Painting Arts and Crafts Association brought together a large number of carving artists such as Huang Zhenghe, Yin Xinsheng, Kan Sanxi, Wu Genhua, and Dong Jinfu, forming a carving creation art circle, and a large number of excellent works continued to emerge at exhibitions in the city. Kan Sanxi was born in Shanghai in 1949. In 1996, he became a cultural celebrity in the Shanghai Textile System, a member of the Special Arts Committee of the China Arts and Crafts Association, and a member of the Chinese Cultural Relics Society and the National Collection Committee. Kan Sanxi studied under Gong Jiadi, a disciple of Wang Fuan, one of the founders of Xiling Seal Society. He studied carving in his spare time and received guidance from the famous ancient architecture scholar Chen Congzhou. Kan Sanxi's miniature architectural works are made of real tiles and real wood, completely imitating antiques, and use the mortise and tenon structure of traditional Chinese wooden crafts. The doors and windows in the building can be opened and closed. Miniature architectural works such as the "grand and unparalleled" panoramic giant micro-carving "Old Summer Palace" and the "Chinese Century Pearl" displayed in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, which is called an "artistic treasure", have extremely high cultural value and appreciation and collection value. The production techniques of miniature architecture are complicated, the learning cycle is long, the labor input is large, the economic benefits are low, and there is a lack of successors, so it is already in an endangered state.
