🎧  Listen to Introduction

The origin of the legend of "Baima Tuoling" is Baima Temple Mountain and Baima Zen Temple in the urban area. Baima Temple Mountain is also known as Sima Mountain. It is said that Sima Yi, who was granted the title of Changping Hou in the Northern Wei Dynasty, climbed this mountain and got the name. "Zezhou Prefecture Records" records: "There is a Wei stele on Sima Mountain, hence the name." Later, because of the legend that Tang Monk returned from the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures and dried the scriptures here, a temple named Baima Zen Temple was built on the top of the mountain, and Sima Mountain was renamed Baima Temple Mountain. The legend of "Baima Tuoling" is widely circulated in Jincheng and has been passed down for more than 2,000 years. It is recorded in "Zezhou Prefecture Records", "Jincheng County Records", "City Records", "Jincheng Folk Tales Collection", and "City Cultural Relics". The content of the legend of "Baima Tuoling" is mainly divided into three types: 1. Mythological legends. There are "White Horse Boy", "Legend of Horse Thief", "Legend of White Horse General", etc.; 2. Buddhist legends. There are "Legend of Stone Buddha Caves on Baima Temple Mountain", "Legend of "Iron Egg" on Baima Temple Mountain", etc.; 3. Historical legends. There are "The Story of the White Horse Running Away in the Battle of Changping" and "The Legend of the White Horse Helping Zhou Shizong". These legends are all based on "the white horse sacrificed his life for justice" as the main line, and local customs, religious worship, historical allusions, natural landscapes, etc. are the main creative background and inspiration sources. The plot is vivid, the content is rich, the scenery is magnificent and simple and natural, and it is deeply influenced by Buddhist culture, with strong folk colors and local characteristics. The legend of "the white horse running away" exudes the glory of the truth, goodness and beauty of Buddhist culture, reflecting the brilliant light of Buddhist culture. The "white horse spirit" of perseverance, loyalty, kindness, selflessness and positive progress is an indispensable spiritual force in the process of building a harmonious society. Today, Baima Temple Mountain has become an important tourist resource in Jincheng City. Zhao Puchu, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and President of the Buddhist Association of China, once named the temple. The grass that was knocked down by the white horse's reins is still long and slanting, and the scattered copper bells have become bell stones, becoming two wonders of Baima Temple Mountain and one of the "four major scenic spots" in Jincheng City. In the course of historical evolution, the legend of "The White Horse Runaway" has been passed down from generation to generation through oral transmission and heart-to-heart teaching, influencing the ideological sentiments of the working people of Jincheng and inspiring the enthusiasm and confidence of the people to overcome difficulties and build a better home. At present, under the influence of the market economy and changes in the social and cultural environment, the social foundation on which the legend of "The White Horse Runaway" depends for survival and development has undergone tremendous changes, and the collection, compilation and work are even less popular. In recent years, in order to carry forward the legend of "The White Horse Runaway", an excellent folk cultural heritage, the city government has attached great importance to it and invested funds to increase publicity. In 2006 and 2009, it created and produced excellent works such as the situational drama "The Legend of the White Horse Runaway" and the cartoon "The Story of the White Horse Runaway". In particular, the "Strive to Be a White Horse Boy" activity was carried out among primary and secondary school students. Good results have been achieved. In 2008, it was listed as the first batch of district-level intangible cultural heritage protection projects in the city. In 2009, it was included in the second batch of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage lists in Shanxi Province.
