The craft of carving rhinoceros in Jiangzhou is one of the crafts of carved lacquer. Carved lacquer began in the Tang Dynasty, and carving rhinoceros was finalized in the Song Dynasty. The craft of carving rhinoceros in Jiangzhou is to pile up two or three kinds of lacquer, such as red, black and yellow, on the surface of the object layer by layer in a regular manner. After reaching a certain thickness (about 0.3-0.5 mm), use a "V"-shaped knife to carve patterns. Different color layers can be seen at the edge of the knife, which is completely different from other carved lacquer and lacquerware. Because the side of the pattern blade shows the cross-section layer of the rhinoceros cortex, it is called carving rhinoceros. At the same time, because the patterns are mostly volutes and cloud hooks, they flow freely and swirl vividly, so they have been called cloud carving in modern times. The production process of carving rhinoceros in Jiangzhou is complicated and the technical requirements are strict. From material selection to mounting, gray tire, lacquering, drawing, carving, polishing and other process processes must be strictly controlled. Generally, products need to be painted about 80 times, and dozens of coats of paint take more than a month. The shape of Jiangzhou carved rhinoceros horn is very exquisite, simple yet elegant, ancient yet luxurious, colorful and magnificent. It is wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant, water-resistant and moisture-resistant. The longer it is placed, the more antique and beautiful the cloud pattern becomes. It can be called "China's unique" and is unique in lacquerware craftsmanship.
