🎧  Listen to Introduction

Dingfan gongs and drums are a traditional folk art of the Han nationality that is popular in Dingfan Village, Wanrong County, Shanxi Province and its surrounding areas. They originated from folk sacrificial activities such as worshipping gods and praying for rain, and were later combined with Yan music and wind and percussion music from the Sui and Tang dynasties. According to the Wanrong County Annals, Li Shimin crossed the Yellow River to the east at the end of the Sui Dynasty and stationed troops in Wanrong. There are many ruins and related legends of Li Shimin in Gufeng Mountain in Wanrong. His military drum music "The King of Qin Inspecting the Troops" is a famous song that has been passed down to this day, and Dingfan gongs and drums were born from this. In addition to welcoming gods and holding festivals during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, and exorcising evil spirits and making community fires, Dingfan gongs and drums are also used in funerals. Traditional gong and drum tunes include [One Dragon], [Tiger Pulling Teeth], [Path Drum], [Noisy Lantern Festival], [Sacrificial Drum], [Sesame Blossoms], [Sacrificial Spirits], [Second Visit to the Palace], [King Qin Inspects Troops], [Mu Guiying Takes Command], etc.; gong and drum sets include [Soul of the Yellow River], [Story Drum], [Sacrificial Drum], [Running Spirit Drum], etc., more than 20 kinds. During the performance, each gong and drum class has two large cymbals, two large cymbals, and two large drums, dressed as warriors, and 10 to 20 people with yellow scarves on their heads, holding long dragon, phoenix, flying tiger, and flame flags to help, and the leader holds a large yellow umbrella, called "gong, drum, flag and umbrella". When going to the temple, they compete with each other, and the drummers dance with drumsticks, jump on the drums, and fly across the drums. The drum beats are compact and free and easy. The musical instruments are composed of 12-jin copper gongs, 8-jin copper cymbals, special 0.4-meter-diameter leather-covered timpani, small copper cymbals, small dou gongs, road-opening gongs, cymbals, etc. The production process of the drums is relatively traditional. The drum shells are made of mulberry wood and Chinese toon wood as the best materials. The drum surface is generally made of yellow cattle and buffalo leather. The drum nails are mostly iron nails and are handmade. Wanrong Dingfan gongs and drums are known for their ruggedness, fierceness, and majesty. When played slowly, they are like gurgling water, and when hit hard, they are like thunder. They express the simple, straightforward, passionate, and heroic feelings of the children of the Yellow River and have important cultural and artistic value. This project is the fourth batch of provincial expansion projects. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
