Carrying iron rod
The iron stick is one of the main forms of folk fire in Dongyang Town, Yuci District. It integrates the essence of oral literature, dance, drama, acrobatics and other arts, and gradually forms a unique and complete performance system. There are many shapes and styles of iron sticks, most of which are story-telling, such as three-person sticks and two-person sticks. The three-person stick is based on two women and one man, such as the White Snake, Xiaoqing, and Xu Xian in the Legend of the White Snake; the two-person stick is based on one man and one woman, such as the husband Zhang Sheng and the young lady Yingying in the Romance of the West Chamber, or those who play two young ladies. The basic structure of the iron stick consists of four parts: the base, the iron frame, the story characters, and the bearers. The production of the iron stick is relatively complicated. The base should be made of good elm, with various backgrounds such as mountains and rivers, pavilions, flowers, etc. The lifting pole also needs elm, two on the left and right, each more than four meters long. There is an iron frame fixed on the base, and various characters are fixed on the frame. The iron frame is difficult to make and has high requirements. It is not only beautiful and unique, but also very strong, because the actors have to stand and swing at a height of three meters, such as the snake Qing carrying a sword: Xiaoqing carries a sword diagonally on her back, and a person stands on the sword head; there is also a rotating iron rod, that is, the person at the top can rotate automatically, which makes people very surprised. The people who carry the iron rod are all strong men, four in front and four in the back, a total of eight people. Most of the girls who carry the iron rod are girls of twelve or thirteen years old. The young actors are dressed according to the ancient drama characters, with long sleeves and heavy makeup. During the activity, the actors swing their arms to the rhythm of the iron rod bearers, floating like fairies. Carrying the iron rod is regarded as a very honorable thing. In the old society, girls from wealthy families never go out of the door or the second door. In order to choose a husband for their children early, they send their daughters to large villages and towns to carry the iron rod. After makeup and dressing up, they can become famous and attract suitable marriage proposals. Source: General Office of Shanxi Provincial Government (No pictures available, welcome to provide.)
