The Legend of Liu Yi
The legend of "Liu Yi's Letter" is one of the longest-standing folk legends in Chinese history. It is known as one of the four major Chinese folk myths and legends, along with Liang Zhu, The Fairy and the White Snake. The earliest literary work that reflects "Liu Yi's Letter" is the Tang Dynasty legend "Liu Yi's Story" which can be found in "Taiping Guangji", which comes from the "Yiwen Ji" compiled by Chen Han and written by Li Chaowei. "Liu Yi's Story" tells the story of Liu Yi, a failed scholar, passing by Jinghe River in Shaanxi Province and meeting the Dragon Girl of Dongting Lake who was herding sheep in the wilderness. The Dragon Girl said that she was bullied by her husband's family in Jinghe River and asked Liu Yi to send a letter to rescue her, and Liu Yi agreed generously. After being rescued, the Dragon Girl yearned for Liu Yi, and after many twists and turns, the two finally became a happy couple. The story of Liu Yi's Letter shows a strange and romantic color and a fresh and handsome demeanor. The plot is also bizarre and dramatic, and has been widely circulated among the people since the Tang Dynasty. To this day, there are different versions of the Liu Yi legend in many places across the country. However, experts believe that the legend of Liu Yi in Hanting has a complete form of cultural resources, with relevant locations and connections, as well as folk religious and sacrificial activities formed by them, which can be called a complete system. Professor Li Wanpeng of the School of Literature of Shandong University has been employed to participate in the research, promotion and review of the application for the "Shandong Intangible Cultural Heritage List" since 2005. He believes that, in comparison, the "localization" of the legend of Liu Yi in Hanting District has a long history, a clear inheritance context, and the corresponding local customs and cultural relics are also well preserved. It is an intangible cultural heritage worthy of application. The inclusion in the national intangible cultural heritage list has undoubtedly injected new impetus into the protection and development of the "Liu Yi Culture" in Hanting District. At present, the district is making every effort to develop and construct the "Liu Yi Mountain Cultural Tourism Scenic Area" project. The total investment of the project is 177 million yuan, focusing on creating an ecological and cultural tourism scenic area with the theme of highlighting the "love and fate" culture. At present, the landscapes such as Liu Yi Temple, Liu Yi Bridge, Tianchi Sea Eye, as well as the pier and ferry have begun to take shape.
