The "Hongguang Sea Festival" is a sacrificial activity of spiritual sustenance and spiritual pleasure naturally formed by the Hongguang fishermen in Kenli County, Dongying City in their long-term production and life. It mainly includes worshipping gods, entertaining gods, and worshipping the sea, and is carried out through worship and performing arts activities. It is a traditional folk sacrificial activity with many cultural contents such as history, religion, and folklore. Kenli County, Dongying City is located at the mouth of the Yellow River. It is an ancient and young fertile land nurtured by the mother river for millions of years. It is the central part of the Yellow River Delta. Kenli County has a long history and rich cultural heritage. It has outstanding people and beautiful scenery. There have been residents here since the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Influenced by folk culture, many traditional folk customs are widely circulated here, and the Sea Festival is one of them. Hongguang New Village under the Hongguang Fishery Office is the village with the largest number of fishermen engaged in marine fishing in Dongying and the longest history. Tracing back to the source, the history of the sea festival has more than 640 years, and the history that can be verified under the influence of history is more than 200 years. This custom reached its peak during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng and the Republic of China, then gradually weakened. After the reform and opening up, it began to prevail in some places, especially in Hongguang New Village. Now it has become a folk custom. Historically, around March 18th every year, the fishermen in this small fishing village would indulge in a pious, mysterious and joyful festival atmosphere, which was more lively than the Chinese New Year. Because "Guyu" is the time when hundreds of fish come ashore, fishermen start to go out to sea, and the sea sacrifice is the most grand at this time. Around the "Guyu" every year, it is the beginning of spring ploughing for domestic farmers. For fishermen, the coming of hundreds of fish ashore is also the season for opening the sea. Before going to sea, the sea sacrifice is inevitable, and this time of year is also the busiest time here. The sea sacrifice custom here has evolved to the present, and has formed a unique sea sacrifice culture. The "Sea Sacrifice Festival" in Hongguang New Village is also called the "Sea Opening Festival" and the "Ocean Opening Festival". The priest chooses an auspicious day to lift the fishing net onto the boat, and then starts the sea sacrifice. After the sea sacrifice, they officially go out to sea for ocean fishing activities. Because the coastal areas of Shandong are adjacent to the East China Sea, all the Dragon King Temples worship Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the East China Sea. In myths and legends, the Dragon King is the king and chief of aquatic creatures. People believe that wherever there is water, there is the Dragon King. Dragons can cause wind and rain, and thunder and lightning. There is also a beautiful legend about the fishermen using rice wine to offer sacrifices to the sea: the reason for using rice wine is that fishermen jokingly call fishing in the sea a fight with the Dragon King. The color of rice wine is chaotic, and the Dragon King can't see clearly after drinking it, so he "overthrows the village", allowing the fishermen to return with a full load. During the sea sacrifice, people have to burn paper, post couplets, set off firecrackers, and beg the Dragon King to bless them with a safe and good harvest. With the frequent exchanges of maritime trade activities between the north and the south, Mazu culture has gradually spread to the Bohai Bay area, and they have to worship the Sea Goddess, Sun Xiangu, and the fisherman. Since 2007, the Party Committee and government of Hongguang Fisheries Office have guided the local people to continuously tap into local folk cultural resources, take the Sea Sacrifice Festival as a breakthrough, and strive to create a folk cultural brand. At present, the Hongguang Sea Festival has become the largest folk festival with the richest fishing culture in Jiangbei, the most complete original sea sacrifice rituals.
