Reed weaving craft at Damatou
Damatou Town has a history of weaving reed mats for more than 600 years. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, Damatou Town was a place where the sea and lakes receded, and reeds and cattails grew in profusion. Therefore, reed weaving products have become the pillar industry of the people in Damatou Town. Due to the rich local reed resources, the locals have relied on family inheritance and personal understanding from generation to generation. More than 95% of the households, men and women are engaged in the reed weaving industry. After liberation, during the difficult period, the people here used the weaved reed mats to exchange for food, dried sweet potatoes, etc. in Jiaodong and other places to feed the people on this land. In the 1930s, the wharf reed mats were well-known throughout the country, with an annual output of more than 3 million reed mats. The products were sold to Hebei, Henan, Anhui, the three provinces in Northeast China, and various cities in the province. They were also exported in large quantities to Incheon in North Korea and Vladivostok in Russia. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Wharf Reed Mat Production Cooperative was established to vigorously develop reed mat weaving. When the local and nearby coastal reeds were not enough, the reeds from Huantai Mata Lake and Boxing Jinqiu Lake were used. Later, it was still not enough, so the reed purchasing team extended its tentacles to Sheyang in Jiangsu, Chaohu in Anhui, and even to Bosten Lake in Xinjiang, which has the largest reed production in the country. More than 40 people were sent to process reeds in Bosten Lake in Xinjiang, bundle the mat strips, send them by train to Xindian Station, and then transport them to Guangrao Wharf for the purpose of weaving mats. This form continued for more than ten years until the 1980s, when "Xinjiang grass" stopped being shipped to Guangrao Wharf. In recent years, with the passage of time, reed weaving is no longer a means of livelihood for farmers in Damatou Town. The large reed weaving and sales companies that once created a prosperous life have gradually disappeared, and the traditional reed weaving craft has slowly faded out of people's lives.
