Huizhou Brush Making Technique
Huizhou pen making was first created during the Southern Song Dynasty. Representative figures include Lv Dayuan of Yi County, Lv Daoren of She County, and Wang Boli, the master pen maker. According to the "Xin'an Tai", the brushes made by Wang Boli were tribute during the Northern Song Dynasty and flourished for a time. With the development of social civilization, modern pens continue to appear, and even keyboards have replaced the paper and pen of the past and have become mainstream. The traditional pen making industry is showing a trend of decline. However, the spring breeze of reform and opening up has brought new development to the traditional art of pen making. With the deepening of calligraphy, painting and tourism, Yang Wen Pen Shop was established in Tunxi Old Street in the 1990s and registered a trademark. At present, the main inheritor of Huizhou pen making is Yang Wen, the owner of Huangshan Yang Wen Pen Shop and a senior arts and crafts artist, who is the director of Huangshan Hui Pen Craft Research Institute. There are more than 200 varieties of Huizhou pens, mainly sheep hair, wolf hair, and mixed hair. In recent years, with the influence of Huizhou pens on the outside world and the needs of calligraphers and painters, Huangshan Huizhou Pen Craft Research Institute has developed a series of new varieties based on the original varieties, among which "Three Brothers of Taoyuan", "Painting the Dragon" and "Ziling Wonderful Pen" are particularly outstanding and in short supply. Huizhou pen making technology is complex and arduous, especially the production of pen heads. Most of the troops work in water for a long time, and it takes a long time to persist. A good Huizhou pen should not only retain the traditional technology but also innovate and improve on the original basis. After continuous efforts, it has achieved considerable success and won awards at domestic expositions, such as the gold medal at the Kunming Art Expo in 1999, the excellent work award at the China Arts and Crafts Creation Exhibition in September 1999, and the silver medal at the first Anhui Folk Arts and Crafts Expo in 2004. It has been loved by famous calligraphers and painters such as Liu Dawei, Feng Dazhong, Du Ziling, Yang Lizhou, Wu Changjiang, and Wang Dongling, and favored by domestic calligraphy and painting enthusiasts. It is also well-known in Southeast Asia.
