The art of painting ancient buildings in Zhongwei has a long history. Applying bright colors to magnificent buildings achieves a luxurious and rich decorative effect. The painting of ancient buildings in Zhongwei has a long history and has different expression techniques from murals and sculptures. It enriches the painting heritage of Zhongwei with its unique artistic form and style. In the "Reconstruction of Zhongwei Confucian Temple Stele" and "Reconstruction of Zhongwei Confucianism Stele" of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, it is recorded that "the beams and pillars were changed and colored". It can be seen that painting was an indispensable decorative project for the construction of government offices and temples at that time. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, religion has been prevalent in Zhongwei, and temples and temples have spread throughout cities and towns. There are "nine temples, eighteen temples, two temples and one ancestral temple" in the county alone. Most of the decorations in ancient buildings are decorated with paintings. In order to protect the surface of wood from dryness and moisture, cold and heat, wind and rain, and ultraviolet rays, and to cover up the natural defects such as knots, scars, and uneven texture and color on the surface of wood, people began to apply thick red or black paint on the surface of wood. Later, as people's demand for beauty continued to increase, architectural painting also changed from its initial simplicity to increasingly complex and gorgeous, and its aesthetic significance became more prominent. "Carved beams and painted buildings" became popular, and the art of painting gradually developed into a unique decorative form in Zhongwei. During the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, craftsmen from Shanxi came to Zhongwei to pass on their skills. Mao Youlun, a famous painter from Shaanxi in the Qing Dynasty, came to Zhongwei to paint the "Hell Transformation Picture" for Gao Temple, which had a great influence on the inheritance of Zhongwei painting. In 2016, Zhongwei's ancient architectural painting skills were selected into the fourth batch of representative projects of autonomous region-level intangible cultural heritage.
