In the Song and Yuan Dynasties, there was a clear distinction between "Northern Crafts" and "Southern Crafts". In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, there was a tripartite competition between "Beijing", "Suzhou" and "Yangzhou". Later, jade carving masters appeared in many places in the north and south, forming four major schools: "Northern School", "Shanghai School", "Yangzhou School" and "Southern School". The works of northern jade carving are solemn and majestic. As a representative of the northern school, Tianjin is one of the four major jade carving bases in the country. "Tianjin style flower and bird jade carving" is mainly based on the carving of flowers and birds. It was first created during the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the late Qing Dynasty (1889). At that time, Tianjin had a developed economy, and businesses and shops selling jade and antiques were very prosperous. Lu Xijie, the successor of the "Tianjin School of Flower and Bird Jade Carving", inherited the jade carving skills of his master Wang Zhankui, the "Black King", and created his own school of carving jade birds. He was called "Lu Niao" by later generations. His unique artistic style carved the "bird" to the point where the tongue hangs out and the claws are visible, and the feathers are clearly layered, which is vivid and lifelike. Jiang Shuanlan, the successor of "Lu Niao", became Lu Xijie's apprentice in 1961. He not only inherited the artistic style of "Lu Niao", but also developed the art of carving flowers, especially peonies, orchids, and chrysanthemums. His realistic and simulated techniques present a "three-unique" carving level. He uses his skills according to the material, and his works are cleverly colored, elegant and refined, and full of artistic tension. His works have won the Treasure Award in the Gold Award in the National Arts and Crafts Hundred Flowers Award, and many of his fine works have been collected by celebrities and leaders. In 2006, he was named a Chinese Arts and Crafts Master, in 2006 he was named a Chinese Jade Carving Master, in 2008 he was named an Asian Jewelry Jade Carving Master, and in 2014 he was named an International Arts and Crafts Master by the United Nations World Cultural Development Committee. The establishment of "Master Jiang Studio" has effectively promoted the popularity of "Tianjin School of Flower and Bird Jade Carving" and has had a great influence across the country.
