Talk about the Spring Nuo Dance

🎧  Listen to Introduction

Spring is the first season of the year, from the first month to the third month of the lunar calendar. When spring comes, people always hold a series of activities to welcome the spring, in order to pray for good weather, good harvest, prosperity of livestock, and longevity and good harvest in the coming year. In the old days, in Zitong County, from the beginning of the twelfth lunar month to the beginning of spring every year, mainly from the tenth day of the first lunar month to the spring equinox in February, there would be people dressed as "Spring Officials", taking the imperial calendar (i.e., calendars), crossing mountains and ridges, going from village to village, and delivering woodcut calendars with agricultural seasons, various taboos, and words such as "good weather, longevity and good harvests" and pictures of spring cows. The Spring Officials wore black gauze hats and official uniforms, holding a wooden spring cow in their left hands and a "spring stick" in their right hands. Every time they went to a house, they would improvise some ballads to sing, bless the host family, and then present the imperial calendar. People called this folk activity "Speaking of Spring". Dancing Nuo. Nuo is a ritual to drive away the plague ghosts in the twelfth lunar month in ancient times. There is a record of "countryside Nuo" in "The Analects of Confucius: Xiangdang". "Lüshi Chunqiu Dong" also says: "The officials are ordered to perform a grand Nuo". Later, Gao You commented: "It drives away all the yin energy and guides the yang. Nowadays, people beat drums to drive away the plague one day before the twelfth lunar month, which is called "Zhuchu". Later, this ritual developed into Nuo opera, a type of opera, which was developed from the Nuo dance to drive away ghosts and plague. It is popular in Hunan, Hubei, Guangxi, Sichuan and other provinces in my country. It is called "Nuoyuan Opera", "Nuotang Opera", "Shigong Opera", etc., and mainly performs repertoires such as "Jiang Nu Looking for Husband" and "Pang Shi Nu". In Zitong, during the Spring Festival in the old days, in addition to Nuo opera and Yang opera performances with a large number of people, there are also simple repertoires performed by one or two people, going from village to village, climbing mountains and wading through water to sing in each household, commonly known as "Nuo Nuo Dance". Recently, we went to the 4th community of Yuquan Village, Yanwu Township, Zitong County, and visited an old folk artist, 86-year-old Mu Changqing. His hair was full of silver hair, indicating that he had gone through a difficult and bumpy life, but he was in high spirits, indicating that he had an open-minded and optimistic character and was full of love for life. He enthusiastically told us that he said that he would sing folk songs and dance Nuo Nuo during the Spring Festival. He has been planting crops for a long time, and has been to Wangcang to make steel and carry tea. Because his eldest son was disabled and his second son died of illness, his family was in a difficult situation and he was old, after learning to sing Nuo Nuo, he mainly sang in Yanwu Township and also went to Zitong County to sing.
