The "Nine-bend Yellow River Array Lantern Custom" in Dongtian Gezhuang Village, Taishitun Town, is a traditional folk activity of the Lantern Festival. Commonly known as the Nine-bend Yellow River Array Lantern Festival and Lantern Field, in the fourth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1371 AD), immigrants from Shanxi brought the lantern field to Dongtian Gezhuang Village, which has a history of more than 600 years. The formation of the Nine-bend Yellow River Array is based on the directions of the Nine Palaces and Eight Diagrams of Zhouyi, and is formed by the traditional pattern of endless wealth and prosperity. There are eight palaces in the array, Qian, Kan, Gen, Zhen, Xun, Li, Kun, and Dui, and the Central Palace, a total of nine palaces, symbolizing the nine provinces of China. People enter from the entrance, pass through the chain array smoothly, and then return from the exit, which means a smooth and peaceful year. The notable feature of the Nine-bend Yellow River Array Lantern Custom is the trinity of lantern array, flower show, and opera, which complement each other and form a unique feature. The flower show and Deyuan Charity Show in the village, which are accompanied by the Nine-bend Yellow River Array Lantern Festival, are well-known far and wide. As another important part of the Lantern Festival, the amateur Hebei Bangzi Opera Troupe was founded during the reign of Emperor Guangxu and has been performing for more than a hundred years. At night, the lights on the array are lit up, and the scene is red. After a burst of firecrackers, the lights on the array are lit together, and more than a dozen flower shows are led by five central banners. Lions, drums, stilts, ten busy people, quarrels, music, etc. enter in order, performing while walking. After about two hours, they walk out of the 1,500-meter lantern array. Inside the array, flags are flying, gongs and drums are beating, and outside the array, there are crowds of people and cheers. When the flower show is over, the big show starts immediately and continues until midnight. The audience is immersed in joy all day long. As a major event in Dongtian Gezhuang Village, the Nine-bend Yellow River Lantern Festival integrates folk crafts and entertainment, and has unique appreciation value; it embodies the wisdom of the people in the "Nine-bend Yellow River Array", which is an important cultural activity for local villagers during the Lantern Festival. While bringing joy to people, it also inherits Chinese traditional culture and has important historical value; at the same time, as a carrier of more than a dozen flower fairs and Hebei Bangzi performances in the village, the Nine-bend Yellow River Lantern Festival has also promoted the development of other art forms and enlivened local cultural undertakings. In June 2008, it was approved by the State Council as the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage projects.
