The craft of making 靰鞡 is a traditional handmade craft of the Manchu people to sew winter cold-proof shoes with animal skins or cow and horse skins. When making it, the leather is first "cooked". The leather is roasted with charcoal fire to soften it. The upper and the bottom are wrapped with a whole piece of leather, plus a piece of leather face. Many folds are left on the leather face when sewing. When wearing it, the shoe mouth is filled with lining cloth (i.e. 靰鞡 waist) near the foot, and a single leather strip or hemp rope less than one finger wide is passed through the ear and tied to the leg. There is a piece of leather 3 fingers wide at the back of the 靰鞡 shoe, called the 靰鞡 root, which is a gripper when wearing the shoe. There are two special iron nails on the back of the 靰鞡 shoe to prevent slipping when walking on ice. This shoe is pointed in front and round in the back, with very dense stitching, and filled with sedge grass, which is warm and comfortable. Sedge is not something that everyone can make, and it requires certain skills. During the production process, the cowhide sedge material is soaked in water for a long time, and after it comes out of the water, the sedge craftsman starts to sew the sedge while it is still wet.
