🎧  Listen to Introduction

Felt making is an ancient skill of making Tibetan clothing materials with wool. The process of making felt is not only a process of showing creative labor through skills, but also a process of constructing a materialized cultural system and realizing creation. The ancient Tibetan clothing "felt" sewn from wool can last for thousands of years. It is mainly used for rain protection, summer clothing, bagging, blankets, felt hats, felt boots, etc. The main production methods are wet felting, needle felting, and a mixture of wet felting and needle felting. The natural oil on the raw wool fiber has a lubricating effect. Although advanced friction equipment and technology can be used today, the basic principle of wet felting still maintains the manual skills of our ancestors. Felt making is a rare traditional skill. The production method is complicated, the materials are scarce, and the price is expensive. There are few inheritors today, and this rare production skill is facing the crisis of gradually disappearing.
