Paper mulberry paper making is a traditional craft of making handmade paper from paper mulberry bark. Beizhang Village in Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province is the birthplace of paper mulberry paper. According to records, Cai Lun invented papermaking here, and the original paper mulberry paper making technique is still preserved here. The raw material for making paper mulberry paper is the bark of the paper mulberry tree, which contains woody bast fibers that are very suitable for papermaking. Making paper mulberry paper requires many processes such as washing pulp, treading pestles, pulping, papermaking, dewatering, drying paper, and peeling paper, which can be broken down into more than 70 steps. Paper mulberry paper making has a long history. In the Tang Dynasty, the papermaking industry in Beizhang Village, Shaanxi Province flourished, and white hemp paper was also loved by Korea and Japan. In the Qing Dynasty, the paper mulberry paper made in Beizhang Village was selected as paper for memorials and imperial examinations. Every papermaking workshop in Beizhang Village worships a statue of Cai Lun. There is a Cai Lun Temple outside the village, and a grand Cai Lun Temple Fair is held every New Year's Eve. In 2008, the art of making mulberry paper was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage protection list.
