Hancheng Yellow River Drum
Hancheng drum formation is an ancient form of community fire performance, popular in the southern part of Hancheng, Shaanxi, especially in Chengbei Village in the southern plateau. There is no detailed evidence of the origin of Hancheng drum formation. Chengbei Village was first built in the 19th year of King Hui of Liang in the Zhou Dynasty. The people of the Zhou Dynasty respected etiquette, and the folks imitated the court music "bell and drum music". The written records of Hancheng drum formation can be traced back to the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. Hancheng drum formation is a kind of palace-style gongs and drums. The performance is grand and the team is strict and orderly. Although it is a palace-style gong and drum, its rigorous performance form incorporates festive elements. The masses use it for self-entertainment, to celebrate the good weather, peace and prosperity, and to praise public morality. The entire performance team likes to use hundreds of gongs and drums to add to its magnificent and festive atmosphere. During the formal performance, all percussion instruments that enter the performance have their own positions and cannot be replaced at will. The lineup layout is led by a large drum with a diameter of one meter outside the center, and several small drums surround the large drum. There are half a hundred cymbals on the right and half a hundred gongs on the left. There must be two or three horse gongs at the end of the front and back teams. Flower poles are located on the periphery of both sides, forming a huge lineup with large and small drums in the center and long gongs and cymbals on both sides. In this lineup, the conductor holds a three-meter-long bamboo pole and a command flag to command the entire gong and drum team. Using the pole and waving the flag quietly, it is heroic and majestic, and it is exactly "a hundred gongs follow the big drum; cymbals are separated, and horse gongs are supplemented; look at the fancy, count the small drums; look at the posture, like a tiger". There are 50 dragon and phoenix flags behind the lineup, adding to its magnificent momentum. The drum score of Hancheng Array Drum was adapted and finalized by Xu Qianyuan and Fan Dianzhe (both from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty) in Chengbei Village. There are existing music pieces such as dog biting, playing five yuan, civil and military champions, walking gongs and drums, and array drums. With the development of society, cultural activities are becoming more and more colorful. The once famous Hancheng drum is facing an endangered situation due to lack of financial support and the departure of many old artists. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
