Xunyi paper-cutting is said to have originated in the Han Dynasty and is mainly spread in Zhongyuan Zhanghong Town, Taicun Town, Zhitian Town and Chidao Township in Xunyi County, the northernmost part of the Guanzhong region of Shaanxi Province. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Xunyi paper-cutting evolved from monochrome paper-cutting to colored paper-cutting. Xunyi's colored paper-cutting is a necessary skill for local women. In daily life, they have to cut window paper-cuts and wall paintings during festivals, cut ceremonial tents for weddings and funerals, cut ceiling flowers and kang flowers for new house decoration, and the base patterns for clothing embroidery, the patterns on flower buns, and the rituals of welcoming gods and sending off ghosts are all inseparable from paper-cutting decoration. Xunyi's colored paper-cutting uses colored glossy paper as the material, and is processed through cutting, pasting, lining and other techniques to form the picture. The composition of the work is full and rich, the colors are harmonious and brilliant, and the interest is full. The picture of Xunyi's colored paper-cutting can be large or small, with the largest size of more than 4 meters, and each work has a corresponding ballad. When cutting paper, paper-cutting artists sing while creating, and the content is mostly local folk opera stories, fairy legends, etc. At present, the age structure of Xunyi's colored paper-cutting artists is generally older, and they are facing the dilemma of no successors.
