Dejiang County is located in the northeast of Guizhou. It was a barbarian land in ancient times. It belonged to Ba and Chu during the Warring States Period. After the Yuan Dynasty, the Shuitejiang Chief Official Office and the Shuidejiang Chief Official Office were established. In the 33rd year of the Wanli Period of the Ming Dynasty (1605), it was renamed Anhua County and belonged to the Sinan Prefecture. In the 8th year of the Guangxu Period of the Qing Dynasty (1882), the seat of Anhua County was moved to Dabao, which is now the county seat of Dejiang. In the second year of the Republic of China (1913), Anhua County was renamed Dejiang County. Dejiang has been a place where Tujia and other ethnic minorities have lived since ancient times. The special geographical location and historical evolution have made Dejiang Nuotang Opera not only have a long history, but also very original and complete preservation. It is praised by experts and scholars as the "living fossil of Chinese drama". Dejiang Nuotang Opera is also known as Nuo Opera and Nuotan Opera. The Tujia people call it "Gangshen". It is a religious sacrificial drama performed with masks, and it is also an ancient ethnic folk custom and cultural activity. It originated from the ancient Nuo ritual and is a kind of ancient Nuo. After the Han Dynasty, it gradually developed into a ritual ceremony with a strong entertaining color. Nuo Opera is the main part of Nuotang Opera, which is divided into main opera and interlude. There are more than 80 branches, including 16 main operas. In addition to Nuo Opera, Nuo skills (called unique skills by Tujia people) are generally performed, and the projects are agreed upon by the host and the altar group. Before holding Nuo activities, Tujia teachers must carefully arrange a Nuo altar (Nuotang), so Nuotang Opera is also called Nuotan Opera. The Nuotan is exquisitely decorated, integrating weaving, paper cutting, dyeing and printing, painting, calligraphy, architecture and other arts. Dejiang Nuotang Opera has multi-disciplinary academic research value in history, folklore, religion, drama, etc.; it is of great significance to the enrichment and improvement of Chinese culture and world culture.
