The Wadden Sea stretches from Den Helder, in the northwest of the Netherlands, past the great river estuaries of Germany to its northern boundary at Skallingen in Denmark along a total coastline of some 500xc2xa0km (310xc2xa0mi) and a total area of about 10,000xc2xa0km2 (3,900xc2xa0sqxc2xa0mi).
Historically, the Rhine was by far the most important river flowing into this section, but it has been greatly reduced due to dams.
It is distinctive in being almost entirely a tidal flat and barrier system with only minor river influences, and an outstanding example of the large-scale development of an intricate and complex temperate-climate sandy barrier coast under conditions of rising sea-level.
