In the Tanoan language of Taos (Northern Tiwa), the pueblo is referred to as "the village" in either txc9x99xccx82otho "in the village" (txc9x99xccx82o- "village" + -tho "in") or txc9x99xccx82obo "to/toward the village" (txc9x99xccx82o- "village" + -bo "to, toward").
Spanish Taos is probably a borrowing of Taos txc9x99xccx82o- "village" which was heard as tao to which the plural -s was added although in the modern language Taos is no longer a plural noun.
However, on All Souls' Day, the Taos Pueblo spend a day with their families and close their village to any non-Indian.
The property includes the walled village with two multi-storey adobe structures, seven kivas (underground ceremonial chambers), the ruins of a previous pueblo, four middens, a track for traditional foot-races, the ruins of the first church built in the 1600s and the present-day San Geronimo Catholic Church.
