After changes made to the design on the recommendations of the competition jury, work began in 1917 on land that had been old gravel quarries that were overgrown with pine trees, and the first phase was completed three years later.

Its buildings and landscape are maintained and restored in accordance with the original design concept, atmosphere, and use and function as a cemetery, and the living material in the pine forest as well as other plantings are carefully regenerated.
The majority of trees at Skogskyrkogxc3xa5rden are now near the end of their natural life cycle and the number of pine trees is decreasing.
One of the major challenges therefore is replanting the pine forest, including re-creating the characteristic xe2x80x9cpillar hall of pinexe2x80x9d at the cemetery.
