Settled by Spanish colonists, Lexc3xb3n Viejo originally had a native population of about 15,000 and it is located on the southwestern banks of Lago de Xolotlxc3xa1n or Lago de Managua (Lake Xolotlxc3xa1n or Managua), south of volcano Momotombo.

Partially destroyed by the Momotombo volcano that irrupted in 1578, the earthquake of 1610 struck the final blow by destroying what remained standing.
