The name Red Fort is a translation of the Hindustani Lxc4x81l Qila (Hindi: xe0xa4xb2xe0xa4xbexe0xa4xb2 xe0xa4x95xe0xa4xbcxe0xa4xbfxe0xa4xb2xe0xa4xbe, Urdu: xd9x84xd8xa7xd9x84 xd9x82xd9x84xd8xb9xdbx81),[3][4] deriving from its red sandstone walls.
Lal was derived from Hindustani language meaning "Red" and Qalxc3xa0h derived from Persian word meaning "Fortress".
Constructed in 1639 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as the palace of his fortified capital Shahjahanabad, the Red Fort is named for its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone.
