Mount Etna, or Etna (Italian: Etna [xcbx88xc9x9btna] or Mongibello [mondxcax92ixcbx88bxc9x9bllo]; Sicilian: Muncibexe1xb8x8dxe1xb8x8du [mxcax8antxcdxa1xcax83xc9xaabxcbx88bxc9x9bxc9x96xc9x96xcax8a] or a Muntagna; Latin: Aetna; Greek: xcex91xe1xbcxb4xcfx84xcexbdxcexb1), is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania.
It is one of the tallest active volcanoes in Europe,[3] and the tallest peak in Italy south of the Alps with a current height of 3,326xc2xa0m (10,912xc2xa0ft), though this varies with summit eruptions.
This makes it by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius.
This eruption, which involved activity from seven distinct eruptive fissures mostly on the south slope of the volcano, was well covered by the mass-media because it occurred at the height of the tourist season and numerous reporters and journalists were already in Italy to cover the G8 summit in Genoa.
