[15] Kaziranga covers an area of 378xc2xa0km2 (146xc2xa0sqxc2xa0mi), with approximately 51.14xc2xa0km2 (20xc2xa0sqxc2xa0mi) lost to erosion in recent years.
Kaziranga has flat expanses of fertile, alluvial soil, formed by erosion and silt deposition by the River Brahmaputra.
River bank erosion, sedimentation and formation of new lands as well as new water-bodies, plus succession between grasslands and woodlands represents outstanding examples of significant and ongoing, dynamic ecological and biological processes.
However, key threats include rhino poaching, riverbank erosion, invasive species, tourism pressure, heavy highway traffic, and livestock grazing (particularly in the areas which have been added to the park).
