[2] Ninety-three percent of the municipality's population of 132,035 lives in the city proper.
The municipality borders the municipalities of Calera, Morelos, Vetagrande, Guadalupe, Genaro Codina and Jerez.
The municipality is wedged between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the subrange called Sierras y Valles Zacatecanos.
