The Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu (xe7x90x89xe7x90x83xe7x8ex8bxe5x9bxbdxe3x81xaexe3x82xb0xe3x82xb9xe3x82xafxe5x8fx8axe3x81xb3xe9x96xa2xe9x80xa3xe9x81xbaxe7x94xa3xe7xbexa4, Ryxc5xabkyxc5xab xc5x8dkoku no gusuku oyobi kanren'isangun) is an UNESCO World Heritage Site which consists of nine sites all located in the Okinawa Prefecture, Japan.
A significant change in status for the kingdom happened in 1609[5] with the invasion of Ryukyu by Satsuma Domain of Japan.
After Japan annexed Ryukyu in 1879, some gusuku were used by the Imperial Japanese Army.
Criterion (ii): For several centuries the Ryukyu islands served as a centre of economic and cultural interchange between south-east Asia, China, Korea, and Japan, and this is vividly demonstrated by the surviving monuments.
In Japan the authenticity of the form/design and materials/substance of each part of the property remains at a very high level, as they have been rehabilitated and restored under strict rules for more than one hundred years.
