Human history[edit]
Significant human impacts on the area began in the 16th century.
Since 2000, the Curonian Spit has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List under cultural criteria "V" (an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is representative of a culture [...], or human interaction with the environment especially when it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change).
The Spit was formed by the sea, wind and human activity and continues to be shaped by them.
At the turn of the 19th century, it became evident that human habitation would no longer be possible in the area without immediate action.
After disastrous human interventions that menaced its survival, the Spit was reclaimed by massive protection and stabilization works that began in the 19th century and are still continuing to the present day.
It is an example of a special landform subjected to human intervention and natural phenomena such as climatic variations.
