A considerable amount of the city's colonial architecture has been preserved in the historic center of the city, which - along with the globally important Cerro Rico de Potosxc3xad - are part of a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Potosxc3xad lies at the foot of the Cerro de Potosxc3xad[4] xe2x80x94sometimes referred to as the Cerro Rico ("rich mountain")xe2x80x94 a mountain popularly conceived of as being "made of" silver ore that dominates the city.
Potosxc3xad became the second largest city, and the site of the first mint, in the Americas.
The city gave rise to a Spanish expression, still in use: valer un Potosxc3xad ("to be worth a Potosxc3xad"), meaning "to be of great value".
By the early 17th century, Basques were well established in the city and made up for a substantial number of the inhabitants in Potosxc3xad.
Semiarid and with average temperatures in its warmest month sitting right on the 10xc2xa0xc2xb0C threshold, the city's climate straddles that of the subtropical highland climate (Cwc, according to the Kxc3xb6ppen climate classification), with subpolar oceanic characteristics and an alpine climate (E).
The city is served by Aeropuerto Capitxc3xa1n Nicolas Rojas, with commercial airline flights by Boliviana de Aviacixc3xb3n, Bolivia's flag air carrier.
A small pre-Hispanic-period hamlet perched at an altitude of 4,000xc2xa0m in the icy solitude of the Bolivian Andes, Potosxc3xad became an xe2x80x9cImperial Cityxe2x80x9d following the visit of Francisco de Toledo in 1572.
It and its region prospered enormously following the discovery of the New Worldxe2x80x99s biggest silver lodes in the Cerro de Potosxc3xad south of the city.

Still dominated by the majestic Cerro de Potosxc3xad, the xe2x80x9cImperial Cityxe2x80x9d of Potosxc3xadxe2x80x99s streets, squares, civic and religious buildings, parishes and churches remain as faithful witnesses of its great splendour and tell the important history of mining in the Americas.
