Bardejov (pronunciationxc2xa0(helpxc2xb7info); Hungarian: Bxc3xa1rtfa, German: Bartfeld, Rusyn: xd0x91xd0xb0xd1x80xd0xb4xd0xb5xd1x91xd0xb2, Ukrainian: xd0x91xd0xb0xd1x80xd0xb4xd1x96xd1x97xd0xb2) is a town in North-Eastern Slovakia.
It exhibits numerous cultural monuments in its completely intact medieval town center.
The town is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and currently maintains a population of about 32,000 inhabitants.
According to one theory, the name town comes from the Hungarian word "bxc3xa1rd" (English: 'chopper, hatchet'), which indicated an amount of forested territory which could be chopped down by one man in one day.
However, the first written reference to the town dates back to the 1240s, when monks from Bardejov complained to King Bxc3xa9la IV of Hungary about a violation of the town's borders by Prexc5xa1ov.
Heavily fortified in the 14th century, the town became a center of trade with Poland.
Bardejov gained the status of a royal town in 1376, later becoming a free royal town.
The town's golden age ended in the 16th century, when several wars, pandemics, and other disasters plagued the country.
By the end of the century, the population of the town had regained the level of the 16th century.
During the Reformation, Michal Radaxc5xa1in was called as town pastor.
Despite further fires in the last quarter of the 19th century, the town continued to thrive, thanks to major industrialization projects in the region.
These efforts culminated in Bardejov receiving the European Gold Medal by the International Board of Trustees in Hamburg in 1986xc2xa0xe2x80x93 the first town in Czechoslovakia to receive the award.
[5] On November 20, 2000, Bardejov was selected by UNESCO as one of its World Heritage Sites, recognized for its Jewish Suburbia and historic town center.
The town draws on its rich heritage to further develop cultural traditions, such as an annual trade fair and the Roland Games (commemorating its medieval past).
The central square (Slovak: Radnixc4x8dnxc3xa9 nxc3xa1mestie), which used to be the town's medieval marketplace, is surrounded by well-preserved Gothic and Renaissance burghersxe2x80x99 houses as well as the basilica.

A special value of the property lies in its present-day vitality and contemporary activities which do not compromise the historic substance, yet it needs to face the challenge of finding an appropriate use for the Jewish suburb as the townxe2x80x99s Jewish population has diminished.

In the sense of this act, the historic core of the town has been declared axc2xa0town conservation reserve and most of the buildings, in both the historic centre and the Jewish suburb, are protected as national cultural monuments.
The propertyxe2x80x99s protection is strengthened by the declared buffer zone of the town conservation reserve that covers 13 ha and corresponds with the World Heritage buffer zone.
All planned activities within the property must comply with the legally binding Principles of Conservation of Bardejov Town Conservation Reserve (2009) and are liable to strict assessment of the project documentation by the regional monuments office.
Bardejov Town Council conducts the property management in close cooperation with the local representative of the respective national authority, Regional Monuments Board Prexc5xa1ov.
