Serra do Mar ([xcbx88sxc9x9bxcax81xc9x90 du xcbx88maxc9xbe], Portuguese for Sea's ridge or Sea ridge) is a 1,500xc2xa0km long system of mountain ranges and escarpments in Southeastern Brazil.
This escarpment is part of the Great Escarpment that runs along much of the eastern coast of Brazil south from the city of Salvador, Bahia.
At the time of the European discovery of Brazil (1500), the Serra do Mar supported a rich and highly diversified ecosystem, composed mainly of lush tropical rain forest, called Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlxc3xa2ntica).
The protected areas that constitute the site contain great biological wealth and are a good illustration of the evolution of the rare remnants of Atlantic Forest of South-eastern Brazil.
As for mammals, they number 120 species, probably the largest in Brazil.
This region has the oldest traces of colonization of Brazil and is located near two major cities of the country, Sxc3xa3o Paulo and Curitiba.
